Abstract

On June 27th, the 300th anniversary of Juan Jacobo Rousseau’s birth was celebrated. Attacked by both conservatives and liberals from the academy, they have pointed at his theory of the social contract as the origin of what they call totalitarian democracy and political messianism, which is at present, nevertheless, the touchstone for rebuilding the State and democracy in crisis.
