Abstract

This study analyzes the evolution of urban development in Guadalajara from 1900 to the present using the territorial life cycle approach. Its objective is to examine the processes of urbanization, suburbanization, deurbanization, and reurbanization to understand how they have shaped the territorial and social structure, as well as the challenges to achieving equitable and sustainable development. The method used is a historical and territorial analysis that identifies changes in urban development models, from a modern approach to the introduction of sustainable strategies. The results indicate that urban sprawl has fragmented the territory, while reurbanization seeks greater densification, posing challenges in equity and planning. This study contributes to urbanism and metropolitan planning by highlighting the importance of multidimensional strategies, urban resilience, and citizen participation to ensure sustainable urban development in Guadalajara.
